INTRODUCTION

Starting out as a humble pub crawl in 2012, the event has since flourished into one of San Francisco’s grandest celebrations for the Fourth of July. The San Francisco Fourth of July Pub Crawl now attracts over 1,000 participants across a two-day span, encompassing more than 10 bars throughout areas like Polk Gulch, Nob Hill, and Russian Hill. A notable attraction within this event is the San Francisco Hot Dog Eating Contest. All of this is masterfully orchestrated by CrawlSF, a local events organizer nestled in the Marina District.

ABOUT CRAWLSF

CrawlSF was created in 2003 by Matt Seliga, a transplant from Pennsylvania, who had recently relocated to San Francisco to work in biotech. To mingle and make some extra income, he desired to replicate a concept he had previously experienced on the East Coast. Matt arranged the inaugural pub crawl on Union Street, spending his evenings and weekends interacting with people, distributing printed cards detailing the event, and liaising with bars to secure their participation.

Following a triumphant first event, CrawlSF broadened its horizons to various neighborhoods throughout the city, cultivating a dedicated cohort of pub crawlers from across the Bay Area. Beyond pub crawls, CrawlSF’s repertoire grew to encompass New Year’s Eve festivities, themed parties, concerts, food events, and even a two-day music festival.

Maintaining a robust presence for two decades, the company has successfully orchestrated well over 200 events in San Francisco, drawing over 300,000 people to CrawlSF event since the start. Despite the company’s expansion and the substantial turnout at each gathering, CrawlSF operates without a conventional workforce. The entire operation is adeptly managed from inception to completion solely by Matt and his wife Caitlin, with the exception of event staff and security personnel contracted for each event.

ABOUT MATT SELIGA

Despite harboring entrepreneurial aspirations, Matt pursued a Pre-Medicine major in college. Post-graduation, he worked at the Johns Hopkins Center for Inherited Disease Research as a DNA Analyst while preparing for the rigorous MCATs and daunting medical school application process. However, his trajectory changed when he received an irresistible job offer from Applied Biosystems in Foster City. Consequently, he put his medical school ambitions on pause and relocated from Baltimore to San Francisco in early 2003.

After settling into life in San Francisco, Matt began to mold the CrawlSF concept. Following its inception, he dedicated all his free time to visiting bars, attending events, and promoting his upcoming gatherings to everyone he met. Although the initial few years were sluggish, the business eventually gained momentum and has been thriving ever since.

While CrawlSF was still finding its footing, Matt continued his biotech career, but in 2008, he decided to fully invest in his personal projects. Alongside CrawlSF, Matt co-founded M Ride, a transportation company, Eye Heart SF, an event production company, and the venture-backed Pinchit.com, a startup specializing in daily deals.

ABOUT CAITLIN YATES

A native of the Bay Area, Caitlin holds a deep-seated enthusiasm for fostering community bonds and orchestrating entertainment. She honed her ballet skills for 13 years at the San Francisco Ballet School before pursuing a BA in Communications at Santa Clara University. During her collegiate years, she was an energetic cheerleader for the Oakland Raiders, a role she embraced for five seasons. She later transitioned to the role of an instructor at Soul Cycle in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Following her stint at Soul Cycle, Caitlin launched her career in real estate with Compass. In 2014, she joined Matt at CrawlSF, deriving immense pleasure from uniting people through these lively large-scale events.

Since its inception in 2003, CrawlSF has successfully orchestrated a variety of events, which include The North Beach Bar Run, The Polk Street Pub Crawl, The Union Street Experience, San Francisco Mardi Gras, Wintersalt Music Festival, Streets of San Francisco New Year’s Eve, among others.
